It's kinda humorous. I mean, the way naive westerner's fall prey to the way things are in Asia, huh?
When you think about it . . . . Here's China organizing this world-class event, the Women's World Cup, and preparing to host the summer Olympics next year. They're spending billions on these events as massive PR campaigns for the image of China as a world player. Then, they go and put invited teams up in hotels that have meeting rooms that actually have two-way mirrors with little rooms for spies to sit in !!!
The question must be begged: Why would a hotel be built to such specifications in the first place?! I mean, it's not like the management couldn't have known that there was a little spying room behind that two-way mirror ! We're not talking some super secretive government office; we're talking a regular hotel where average business people would stay and have meetings with their average Chinese counterparts. The hotel obviously had the room spying room built and the two-way mirror installed specifically because there is a demand for such facilities and they can make money by offering them. AND THE CHINESE GOV'T HAS HAD TO HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS HOTEL OFFERED SUCH FACILITIES ! And yet, they booked their World Cup opener rival team in the hotel.
Portentous? Shall the summer Olympics in Beijing be a repeat of Seoul '88 . . . only more sophisticated? (We all know that the Chinese or the Japanese are far more sophisticated than the Koreans when it comes to cheating; . . well at just about anything, really.)
(BTW: How do you like the way the North Koreans injured a key U.S. player and scored both of their goals in the 9 minutes of play that she was on the bench being treated? That was in NK's opener against the U.S. the other day. Nothing sophisticated about it. )
" ne ' er the twain shall meet " ( Well, at least not yet. ) |
