I'm leaving for Busan in a few weeks and was wondering what the bear minimum that I would need to get by for the first few weeks until my first paycheck comes in. I plan on being fairly frugal until that point. Were I to hit a crisis I do have a financial backup plan, so I'm not being quite silly enough to show up poor; I just don't want to spend very much money until I get more settled.

So, what would be the minimum that I would need to eat and have on hand for unexpected expenses?

Depending on how frugal you can be will result in how much you will need.

When i first came here four years ago, i only brought 250$. It is generally recommended that you bring 500-1000 (1000 being that you are far from you first pay check). But i had aplenty of that 250$ left over before i got my first paycheck in 3 weeks from my arrival.

Sorry if thats not too helpful. x_x

That's very helpful, thank you.

I was hoping to not need to exceed 400 US dollars prior to my first pay check. This obviously means that I will be passing on drinking and some other leisure activities for the first few weeks, but I'm comfortable with that. I haven't worked fulltime for most of the summer and have had plenty of time to spend wasted... I'm actually looking forward to being a recluse for a bit Laughing

LOL

Well that will probably help you keep it cheap for those first few weeks. ^^

Since food can be cheap and delicious or expensive (EDIT: depending on where you go of course), that is one expense that you shouldnt have to worry about. You shouldnt need more than 400$, in fact if you can be frugal (but still have some fun at night) you could do with less.

Which area will you be moving to in Busan? I am in Nam-gu.

I'll be in Buk-gu. I'm supposed to leave around the 26th of September, but my VISA might not be ready. We're playing it by ear. Hopefully not much later than that, as they need me on the 1st of October and I hope to be there for that.

I'm still trying to figure out what everything in my address is, but I think that is what you were asking for Laughing

Yup that is what i was looking for. ^_~

You are just about north of me (jumping one area). You will be able to keep your expenses low in Buk-gu (barring any unforseen circumstances of course ^^).

I hope it all works out for you. I know i had a time restraint when i was first coming (my VISA was delayed by one day and had me worried sick ^_^).

Dad, is that you?

I speak good English!

(fixed it. To clarify, my father continually picks on my grammar and then mocks me for thinking that I'm equipped to be teaching ESL)

When I came to Korea eleven years ago, I brought about 3000 dollars with me because I didn't know what to expect, and I didn't want to be caught up in a bad situation with no way out. I was lucky, my company stocked my refrigerator with plenty of food and beer, so I didn't need anything except party money till my first paycheck. I was very lucky, because I had a nice apartment and all the amenities, while other people I met came into very bad circumstances and worked in hell holes. Just remember this: When the time for action is here, the time for preparation is past. If you come unprepared, and you don't get paid on time...you could be stuck for awhile without any money. If you bring extra money, it doesn't mean you have to spend it.

Your father should be the one coming over then. He'd be a good fit for these forums. Laughing

Words of wisdom. Listen to the pooch.

I veto this decision.
