I'm new here, living in Busan for about two weeks now. I love Korean food, but the one thing I'm truly missing is latin style black beans. I know back home they're also called turtle beans. Does anyone know if/where they might be able in Busan or what they're called in Korean so I can ask around? I think there's a Mexica place in Seomyeon, so my next plan is to check it out and see if they have any and can tell me the name. |

Phewf. You'll be lucky, son. I've never seen black turtle beans in this country, but you'll find pinto beans if you're willing to come to Seoul. They sell them in the Foreign Food Mart in Itaewon. Why not befriend someone who lives in Itaewon and get them to send you some? |

Refried beans is an abomination to all that is good food.
Why eat crap that looks like puke, tastes like puke, and makes one puke?
My dog's diarrhea tastes better than that (and I know fo sho - my Newfie friends told me so). |

My best guess you've never been to Mexico. |

Any large supermarket will have (dry) black beans. I don't know how they compare to Mexican black beans, though. The problem is, there are two kinds of black beans here. One kind has a black hull, but is white inside. |

i'd guess the OP wants the canned, mexican style...in which case the only place i've seen it is hannam, and for around 6,000 won a can. stock up a bit when you come to seoul i guess. |

Costco in Daegu has them sometimes. You can get kidney beans at places like Homeplus or Megamart. It's not the same, but you got to learn to sustitute or go without in Korea since there isn'ta wide variety of products available outside of Seoul |

Thanks for all the replies. I'm looking for the latin variety, canned or dried. I'm fine substituting, but black beans and rice got me through college and I'm really having withdrawals. Pintos are good, but just not the same. I know finding some Lizano sauce would be a stretch... Actually I came to Pusan expecting to go without, and I've been really impressed with what's available. I keep saying "I wish I could find..." and my korean friends look at me funny and say it's at E-mart. |

I make black beans and red beans and rice every week.! Just look around or find a friend in the military. Other option is to just have family send you a box with several bags. |

Yeah, those beans rock. Not cause they're tastey (not sure if I've ever even had them), but because of all that dancing they do in that one commercial. I'm still curious why there's only one girl bean and 150 boy beans... |

Have you found black beans there recently? I've scoured both large import grocery places near the mosque, and couldn't find 'em. They're never at E-mart or Shinsaegae either.
It's possible to check online to see if they have them right now at Hannam though. |

I used to buy canned black beans from the Costco in Yangpyeong. I've been to Sambong and Yangjae Costcos recently and did not see black beans. I'm wondering if they've been discontinued. |
