NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.
NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.
Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.
The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Tuesday that no official decision has been made and that the club has not been notified.
The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.
Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked when he expected a verdict, but said those questions had to be directed toward Goodell.
"There is an investigation going on now, and perhaps an adjudication of it, and I think it would be inappropriate at this time to make any comment," Kraft told reporters at a charity appearance Tuesday. "When you're successful in anything, a lot of people like to try to take you down and do different things. We understand that.
"We worked very hard to try to put an organization together that we all could be proud of in New England, and we're very proud of the New England Patriots organization and the record that they've established over the last 13 seasons and one game."

Ha, I knew they weren't that good. What does this say about their championships? Is this how they were able to beat the Colts so many times? Is Brady that good or is he getting fed opposing team defensive coverage into his headset? I am a Dolphins fan so my opinion is that of spite and hatred for that team. Any other takes? |

Here is what Hines Ward thinks of the Patriots cheating:
Quote: |
Ward is certain the Patriots, while known for the thoroughness of their scouting under coach Bill Belichick, had some kind of unusual help before their 24-17 upset victory in Pittsburgh in the January 2002 AFC championship game. The Patriots went on to win the first of their three Super Bowls.
"Oh, they knew," Ward said Wednesday. "They were calling our stuff out. They knew, especially that first championship game here at Heinz Field. They knew a lot of our calls. There's no question some of their players were calling out some of our stuff." |

Can you imagine how much worse it will be if the Patriots (and Brady in particular) have a bad season when so many pundits have already got them penciled in as this years Super Bowl champs? |

I'm interested to see what the punishment is. I don't think docking a draft pick is adequate: would taking an team's entire draft be fair? I'd like to think so, but I wonder what the players' association would say, since that would mean 7 more people'd go undrafted.
I was reading a blog that quoted a former college player---can't remember who---who mentioned probation. Like in college sports, where the NCAA will institute the death penalty and eliminate a team from post season play . . . what if the Patriots were prohibited from making the playoffs for a certain number of years? It's an interesting idea, though the guy and his idea were panned by the pundits reporting on it. |

Although I would love for this kind of sanction to be imposed on the Pats, I think that it would never happen because of the dollars involved. There would be way to much money lost if they did that, and the NFL at the end of the day is a business, trying to stay on top of the sporting world.
How about suspending Belichick for maybe 4-6 games and taking away some draft picks, and throw in a fine for good measures. You know the Comish is gonna drop the hammer though. |

They are going to get booed more than any team has ever been booed everywhere they play this year.
Booed more than the Cowboys at Giants stadium.
Booed more than the Yankees at Fenway Park.
Booed more than Michael Vick at a PETA convention. |

Indeed.
He will be laying the smackdown on the Patriots. No doubt about it....
I'm thinking some draft picks for sure...Probably all of their first, second, and hell probably third....that would be brutal but would send one hell of a message. Welcome to the Goodell era.... |

The NFL has fined Patriots coach Bill Belichick the maximum of $500,000 and stripped the team of its 2008 first-round draft pick for violating league policy on the use of video equipment on the sidelines.

Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

Let's not move on...just yet. The Patriots organization deserves to be thoroughly investigated to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. I think you''re wrong that all the teams use video cameras to cheat. There's no evidence of it. And yes, I think it does taint their championships a bit. Even if they had just a small edge (1 or 2%), that's enough to tip the scales. Just ask a casino owner. |

You call that a fine? I call THIS a fine!

The $100 million fine imposed on McLaren is 40 times larger than the previous F1 record ($2.5 million). |
