Went for the snow festival (February). Was amazing and well worth a visit then. Went to the beer museum and took a day trip to an onsen town. Otherwise just wrapped up and took in the sculptures made from ice and snow.
It is cooler there in the summer than the rest of Japan and (supposedly) has no rainy season (June). Winter cold and snowy but bearable for me. |

I haven't been there since the winter Olympics were there back in '72 but it was a great place to visit....
I can't imagine that the natural beauty has changed but I also can't tell you about anything current.
Weather: cold in winter (they held a winter Olympics there) -
nice in summer, sorta like Vancouver or Seattle in a good year ... |

Thanks, I'm thinking of going for the Snow Festival next year and I'm also thinking of moving there one day. I love Japan, but I hate humid weather. I've read that Sapporo is not humid like the rest of Japan, so I'd be more comfortable there. |

I went there many times as my ex was from sapporo......
Really nice city but the winter killed me...if you are used to cold winters you would be fine but it is bloody cold, siberian cold. Summer is really pleasant though....
the snow festival is great and the national parks near the city(and across all of hokkaido) are incredible....
Bad side is it is a LOOOOONG way from anywhere...it is a flight or a long train ride, both which are not cheap in japan. Factor that in when moving there....that was the biggest complaint of expats i met there. they loved it but couldn't go anywhere else as it cost too much. |
