Is it okay to carry a knife in case a dog attacks you? What is the best defence against an angry dog? Brick, wisdom, quiet words, knife frenzied drug induced power strike?

I'm a bit paranoid again but I'm also scared of dogs.

I spent about 20 minutes deciding my avatar and I finally chose this one:

Have you ever heard the question "How many roads must a man walk down?" Well, in that case the anser is, 42. You should carry no less than 42 knives in case you are assaulted by a poodle, pit bull, mastiff, or any combination of canines therein. And yes, I am completely serious.

If you see an aggressive dog, do not give him eye contact. Instead, look away and yawn. Yes, yawn. This is doggy talk for "you're the top dog, and I have no intention of challenging it." I saw i t on the telly. Smile

I've consulted with The Man and we've decided that your crazy. I am serious, I just use humor to present my point. I'm in Thailand now and dogs sometimes bark at me, so I'd like some info to feel at ease OR carry a knife. Is that a song by Kenny Rodgers, in which case I apologise. Are you a girl?

No, no, no. You've got to let them sniff your butt. That's how you build rapport with a dog.

Buddha once said "If you are a Troll you will attract Trolls". So much wisdom from one of the most underappreciated wits of our time.

Thanks everybody for your advice.

Well I've seen what you can do with one Shetland, but I couldn't imagine any more than that.

Don't carry knives. More trouble than they are worth.

Trying to stab a dog with a knife will most likely get your arm bit.
Even if you kill the dog you will then have to mess with getting it examined
for rabies and go through the treatment. I have no idea how to do
that in Korea and I doubt the locals do either. Is Korea rabies free?

Carry something long like a folding luggage cart, cane, or umbrella. If the dog comes after you then you put that in the dogs face so they will attack that while you walk away from their territory. Don't hit the dog. Just keep your item between you and the dog while leaving. Don't give the item to the dog. It's your protection.

There's a company that sells a stick with a tennis ball on the end for this purpose, but you could make your own.

I couldn't get the video to work, but this looks like a spring loaded umbrella.
