I've been looking through apartments on One Room and finding some pretty good offers, a lot cheaper stuff than what's on NearSubway. Well the reason I need cheaper is because I'm a student, thus looking for low budget studio accommodation. I have no trouble navigating the website despite being in Korean, but I'm pretty sure I'd have no idea what to say or do when contacting someone about an apartment. So what do I need to do. Do I need a Korean to do it for me, or can I use one of those guys from NearSubway to help with it?
Right now I'm trying to figure out how to do this. Would it be best to pick out a place before landing in Seoul, or after landing? I think I'd only be able to spend up to a week in a hotel, as I have lots of other costs to worry out.
I've only had the hotel experience so this will be my first studio place. |

| I'd say you want to see it first. No matter how snazzy the place is, if it is next to a construction site, or worse--an elementary school, you may want to check out the second place on the list. |

To honest I don't care about those things. But obviously if the water doesn't work right I'd be bothered then.
So assuming I spend a week in a hotel while checking the place/places out, how do I get past the translation problem? Unless someone can give me a crash course in apartment related grammar and vocab  |

Stay in a hostel during the first week or two. International House apparently is good and clean and relatively cheap.
What you might want to stay in, as you are a student, is *Goshiwon/Goshitel*. These are really study rooms but it is fully furnished with bed etc. I think you have to share a bathroom... may be some have en-suite.
What is your budget? Let me find some links for you. |

Nah thanks, I want (and can have) a studio. No sharing for me. I'm in for the long haul in Korea so I want to be comfortable. Budget is well.. good enough.  |

Do you know what neighborhood your school is in?
Do you already speak some Korean? Will you have any contacts here to go with you to a real estate agent?
Fyi, hotels are about 30-35 a night, which isn't too bad. Trekking around looking at apartments takes a long time, and often they aren't immediately available. You may end up in a hotel for more than a week, but it sounds like you're loaded so that shouldn't be a problem. |

| Find a "budongsan" and someone who can help translate. You'll have to search your ideal area for them. It's 부동산 on the signs, there'll be a quite a few if it's a residential 'hood. |

Yes, Sinchon. So Line 2 would be good, eh? How long does it take to get from the longest point to point on Line 2? 40 minutes?
Yes, I have lots of Korean contacts.
Well if I was that loaded I'd just buy one of them expensive studios in Kangnam or someplace. Hm trekking around apartments doesn't sound good. I hope I can get lucky and strike "gold" with the first few viewings. |

Goshiwon. Seriously.
Cheap, free eggs, rice and ramyeon, and you will meet a lot of interesting people there. Stay in a goshiwon in Shinchon, then look around for housing. I wish someone gave me the same advice back in 2003. |

I think he meant stay in the Goshiwan while you looked for your permanent apartment. From what I've read here you can rent them for just one month. |

What point to what point? You mean take the entire loop around line 2 (Green Line)?
I've only done that once, by mistake when I fell asleep. I believe it would take about 1 1/2 hours to make the entire loop around line 2. |
