Well, D-War has landed abroad as Dragon Wars to the predicted wretched reviews. The Korean tabloids that I read are spinning it pretty hard. You can check out three of the articles that I translated plus some very special netizen comments.

Really, one of them is very special.

Moreover at the American site Yahoo!.com it was the second-most searched for trailer behind 3:10 to Yuma, the current American reaction has been good, and its chances seem good to have a successful run.

On the other hand, influential daily The New York Times said of D-War, the visuals are good but the script is Z-grade, and most movie websites wrote negative reviews.

D War. Yea I know the story line.

English Teacher: This useless, dumba**, pathetic, student is getting a D
English Department Korean Professor: We must be kind, and understanding (besides she has perky hooters), A+
ET: D
EDKP: A+

Fight ensues, fists fly, etc

EDKP wins the D war.

I haven't seen it and have no desire to watch it, but the movie is projected to make about $4 million this weekend in the US. "Gaemul" or The Host only made $2.2 million during its entire run in the US and I think it was the most successful Korean film to date to be released Stateside - but don't quote me on that.

That said, D-War supposedly opened on 2200 screens which is considered a wide release. That's a lot of fucking screens for a movie that doesn't even deserve a theatrical release imho. Just to give you an idea, movies like Spiderman III and Shrek II opened in over 4,000 theaters but a typical wide release will open in about 2000-3000 theaters. So if you look at the per screen average, a $4 million weekend means it's a total bomb...especially given the movie's budget. Didn't it cost something like $70 million US to make after they accounted for P+A and marketing? Wtf? Who in their right minds approved this POS movie?

However, I'm sure there'll be some Koreans out there who will say that the movie is a success in America because it's box office receipts beat out The Host. Whatever. Rolling Eyes Btw, I thought The Host sucked balls too. Koreans need to start making better movies.

Here's where I got my info from:

The movie that Ed Wood would have made in the era of CGI, complete with awkward editing, wooden acting, and a story that becomes impossible to care about at all.

That sounds worth a look.

Korea makes some great movies, which makes this D War BS all the more puzzling. Kim Ki Duk is a great director, who gets tonnes of accolades in the west, but gets largely ignored at home. Meanwhile the Koreans are foisting this crap on us that no one wants to see ...

Early estimates are putting it's total weekend take at around $5.4 million. It opened on 2,275 screens so it's per screen average was a very unremarkable $2373.

Honestly, it did better than I expected, but it's still a box office bomb. Curious as to how the Korean media will spin this one...

It's all Bushies fault. If America didn't invade Iraq, D-War would have been #1 all across the country!!!!

Yeah, but this movie isn't ironically bad. They didn't know it was bad, they apparently thought it was great. I can only watch and enjoy bad movies that are bad on purpose (Charlie's Angels 2, for example).

If you are worried about safety and wanting to teach abroad and are US certified, try doing a search for DOD jobs on military bases.
