1) "Yeah, back to the contract. I am American and I am offended."
I am American and I'm telling you to STFU.
2) Also, a bunch of you guys smell funny. Seriously, you smell from three, four seats away. Please shower. (All nationalities.)
3) And drinking at 3 pm when you're supposed to be at a lecture? Did you leave your brain in the West? (All nationalities.)
(Dude--some of the workshops at GEPIK are actually good. Seriously. But some of the people....please, go back home NOW.)

I've got to agree with the OP on this one. The GEPIK program/contract/orientation's far from perfect but it's not half bad compared to alot of other things which am not really going to get into. They provide half-decent furnished housing, they won't screw you over with your pay (cos it's a public school job afterall) and so forth so being offended by the contract is just nit-picking and if the wording offends you then try and bloody get a huge legal contract in English and translate it into word-perfect Korean!
Honestly, there's always one in every crowd isn't there? During my orientation I had this guy (who am sorry to say ia also an American) who got burned by his hagwon and he was totally taking it out on the poor GEPIK supervisors!!!
And no, am not a GEPIK staff member, just an ex-GEPIKer who knows the GEPIK organisers really well and have watched them sweat their arse off organising the orientation and coordinating the GEPIK program in general. Have a heart people! |

This kind of stuff happens at every orientation.
#1. You got the retard who won't stop complaining about the contract that they ALREADY SIGNED.
#2. You got the people who think coming to Korea is like going to a frat party so they have to drink and act accordingly.
#3. You got the people that have been in Korea for some time now and they would rather be back at school teaching than sit through boring lectures.
#4. You got the people that just got here who are in for a HUGE reality check. You can find these people because they think going to the Bahamas on a cruise is considered visiting another country.
#5. Then you got the primadonna. You always have one girl who thinks she's Paris Hilton and refuses to take off her sunglasses. EVER. |

I should've given more background info. The dude was bitching because the man talking about the contract was talking about culture shock. He was describing what it was like when some Americans showed him guns for the first time. He wasn't being offensive or rude, he was talking about his own culture shock. And WOWWWWEEEE this man was offended as hell about it.
Then, another man freaked out at Dain Bae about what it would cost to go to court if you had to take a school to court. And uh, she can do what about that? |

In all fairness to the person with the sunglasses you are talking about, I know her personally and felt the same as you until I found out she had just undergone laser surgery on her eyes the day before she attended the orientation. She is a decent person, and I was somewhat embarrassed to think rudely of her after discovering what the reason behind the sunglasses actually was...So, appearance isn't always what it seems to be...
Regarding some of the other things going on with the orientations, I just took the good and left the rest to whomever wanted it...There is always something good to come away with from any gathering like this... Remember, 90% or more of the people attending these gatherings are not trained educators, so there is something for them to take away from it...
As someone who has taught for more than 24 years, I attended because it was suggested I go, but my main interest in going was to network with some of the people whom I felt could help create a social circle of new friends...that part was accomplished, so rather than complaining about anything, I just enjoyed myself...Truly, the orientation won't mean much to everyone, but people normally get from something whatever they put into it...That's my opinion anyway... |

This is a perfect example of why people should stop and think before jumping to conclusions about others. You misjudged the situation, pkang. You thought you knew what you were talking about, but you didn't. I hope you've learned a small lesson.

I think the OP was making a generalisation, not talking about 1 specific girl who the other guy just happened to meet also. I mean what are the odds of both of you going to the same orientation and remembering the same girl??? Hell even if you did, the OP did state that he was making generalisations.
This place is a minefield for flaming! |

Oh boy! Meetings! Useless, stupid meetings that can't teach you anything because, well, you're already the expert.
I wouldn't even go. |

I meant in a general way. For every 1 person with a legitimate reason to protect their eyes, there are about 10 who just came from California and think a public school is Beverly Hills. |

Thanks for letting me know...I just wanted to clarify about the person who was there at the last orientation whom I met and found out the reason for her situation...It certainly taught me a lesson about not jumping to conclusions about someone without knowing their circumstances...Nevertheless, people get all too worked up over the orientation in the first place...It is time to relax and meet people just as long as you aren't going to go on a drunken binge like some do...I am quite embarrassed by some of the behavior since I have been in this country long enough to understand that Koreans are generally forgiving people, but they have little tolerance for blatant disregard of property and criminal activity, especially from foreigners...
No one is saying people shouldn't have fun, but there are lines that should not be crossed regradless of what country a person lives in...The behavior of some at the orientations is criminal and it should be treated as such...I know if it was the USA people would suffer the consequences of their actions, why should it be any different in Korea? |

Spot on. All of them. Maybe one or two additions:
#6. Know-it-all guy (always a guy) who just knows everything and whose observations aloud are accompanied by general groans after day 1.
#7. The eccentric, utterly peculiar over 40s. Male or female, these folks have strange mannerisms, and frankly look as though a return to their psychiatric medication is in order (and if there never was any such medication, giving some a try).
#8. The Maori/Aborigine/native American chick with a 'tude. The former of the three in my case. I said "hello, my name's SPIN", "hello SPIN - wackamackatipu is the name of my tribe". |
