I'm thinking about applying for a university job (starting March 1st), and am about to start making a few speculative enquiries by e-mail. I have a MSci and PhD (in chemistry and chemical engineering respectively), but have read on a thread about uni jobs that a PhD will seriously count against you.
I'd actually prefer a faculty (postdoc) job in a uni chemistry department, as it's something I'm far more qualified for, but an English teaching position would be fine. I'd initially planned on e-mailing a prospective university asking about postdoc positions, and then also mentioning that I'd be interested in an English teaching position if there wasn't a postdoc available. However, I can't really enquire for a postdoc without mentioning that I have a PhD. With a couple of exceptions, none of the university websites I've looked at have job postings, and none advertise on recruitment websites.
I could try e-mailing the chemistry and English departments separately, but (in my experience of universities) recruitment is handled centrally and they'd probably notice two enquiries from the same person. Likewise, I could e-mail professors personally, but I think that might make a bad impression. Any advice on how to proceed from here? |
