Why did you decide to come teach in Korea?

I didn't get my JET application in on time.

Someone told me the pay was better than Japan and that Koreans were really kind towards foreigners. (1 out of 2 ain't bad)

-opportunity to learn the language and culture
-conveniently located a quick plane ride away from many tropical areas
-twice the money, half the work as teaching back home
-great opportunity for advancement at certain international companies
-very committed students
-and my girlfriend (now wife) is korean

First is the fact that i have had many Korean friends in my life and have personally studied Korean for the two years before i came. Putting these two things together led to my eventual desire to travel here.

Second for me is the food. Four years and it is still the best. ^^

for someone like myself, with no experience or qualifications, korea was easier to break into than japan. i hadn't even thought about korea, though, until someone got a hold of my email address while i was applying for jobs in japan.
i still planned to go to japan after getting a couple years of teaching experience behind me. but korea got addictive. and then i got married and stuff. part of me wishes i'd done some proper time in japan before i settled down. but not so much that i regret staying here.

Well, I haven't actually gone yet, but I'll give you my naive reasons for deciding to go:

--Made a lot of Korean friends here who are constantly encouraging me to go
--Lovelovelove drinking with korean FRIENDS (not acquaintances)
--Interest in the language and culture (thanks to having lived with 35 Koreans in a sharehouse)
--Significant amount of pay to get rid of my student debt
--I want to try dog meat just once in my life
--the most shameful but honest reason: never had a one-night stand, just want to try it once; possibly more likely to happen in a foreign country (I like Japanese girls though...Korean girls I've met are uppppptttiiiiggghhhhtttttt)
--and lastly, just the experience of living/working elsewhere for an extended period of time. Too many people from my neighborhood get stuck in this cycle of never leaving their immediate area and working as sales reps for all the franchises within a 20 mile radius of their home.

It was the only interesting teaching job in the Sunday classifieds of the Kansas City Star. That was 1996, and I had had my fill of the prospect of teaching in the Kansas City area. This sounded like an adventure, a place to find myself, a way of seeing the world -- got a charge from the whole idea. Yes, it was a recruiter. Stayed largely for the work, for the people, and for the experience of being in a foreign land. Yes, dating Korean did influence the whole idea of staying. Left in 2003. Was gone for about two years, but returned in 2005. Glad to be back.

Friday night I was coming home on the last subway train. In the station was a man taking a piss against the wall. On the train were two ajoshies passed out drunk in awkward slumps. A man in his 20s suddenly vomited all over the floor.

I wanted to be able to experience such pleasures before I die. Now I can die happy.

I was scared of moving to Toronto (from Cambridge, ON).
