I'm leaving for Korea in a couple of weeks, VISA pending. For the longest time, people didn't really believe that I was actually going to go. When it finally settled in that I was, I started to get the occasional, "oh, so you're really going, huh? Well, I've always meant to tell you... and now that you're going I won't really have the chance, so... if you want to 'hang out' before you go, I'm your man".

I wish I was kidding, but this has happened no less than 5 times now. I'm actually starting to feel embassed as the conversations play on and I realize exactly where they are going because I've already heard it several times before.

I'm not writing this to boast. I really consider myself relatively average looking on a good day. I was just wondering if this is normal behaviour... did anybody else go through this prior to taking a leap out of their home country for a year abroad?

Now that they know they won't have to see you every day for the rest of their lives, they are comfortable letting you know they want a no string attached *beep*.

It's not a compliment.

That was more or less my take on it as well.

I assure you that if I were to troll I would come up with something slightly more humourous and less pathetic than the above.

Unfortunately it did happen to me as well.

Two guys I knew "offered" themselves up for one last go before I left.

One of my closest guy friends didn't do that, so much as profess his undying love for me and beg me not to leave.

The first two I just kind of laughed at, and told them to get over themselves.

My friend though, was dead serious. Almost to tears serious. I felt kind of bad, since we've been friends since the 4th grade. He understood my take on things though after we talked for about an hour. With me going to Korea, and him moving to Ottawa for work, it just wouldn't have worked. But I told him I really appreciated him telling me. He said he wouldn't have thought to tell me, but he knew I wasn't the kind of girl to make him feel uncomfortable about it, or allow it to ruin our friendship.

But yea, it happens.

Sadly it didn't happen to me. I got more hugs from skinheads than from girls on the news of my leaving.

Happened to me, and I'm not Brad Pitt. Two Korean girls I knew were up for it knowing I was going. This was quite a while back.

Happened in other counties too. They love you more when yr about to go.

It's not necessarily an insult either.

Dudes were looking for the opportunity to have sex without the usual mess afterwards. When I left Korea I had it too, suddenly female friends were getting a bit saucy. Milk it for all its worth girl, you may not get another chance like this.

Gay friends, how very hip of you. Whew though? Don't you like shagging then?

Not hip. I am very picky about close friends. My closest friend I met when we were 12. He certainly wasn't out then. We keep a tight circle of friends, and most of his friends are gay. Hip has nothing to do with it.

I dig shagging, just not gay guys, and not straight guys who want a quick *beep* before not seeing me again for God-knows-who-long. If I want a one-night stand, it's going to be with someone I have NO history with whatsoever.

So loyal deserving friend for many years in love with you gets nothing, random total stranger gets the full unbridled rompy? Nice.
