I guess if one took this as a serious threat (see below), one might point out that Ahmadinejad and Chavez are employing classic "wedge" tactics in Latin America and the Caribbean -- and are not only dedicated to harming American interests whereever possible but taking actual steps to do so.
On the other hand, one has to ask what these two can actually do. For one thing, Chavez and now apparently Ahmadinejad's siding with Bolivia on issues like its coastal dreams and its natural-gas developmental needs will very rapidly alienate Chile, just as Chavez's offensive rhetoric has driven Mexico and other regional governments to reconsider their relations with Venezuela.
I think this is worth following, then. But, as it is, probably just a flash in the pan -- and a flash, moreoever, that might eventually blow up in someone besides America's face. "American foreign policy," for those who choose that theme, may unite Latin Americans against America; but under that surface, most Latin Americans despise each other much more intensely.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- The leaders of Iran and Venezuela cemented an alliance aimed at countering the United States, while the Iranian president reached out to a new ally in Bolivia and declared that together, "no one can defeat us..."
"Together we are surely growing stronger, and in truth no one can defeat us," the Iranian leader said through an interpreter. Apparently referring to the United States, he said, "Imperialism has no other option: Respect the peoples [of the world] or accept defeat..."
Ahmadinejad's trip underscored his growing ties to Latin American nations, including Nicaragua and Ecuador, even as the U.S. tries to isolate him internationally. |
