CALGARY - A former president of the Canadian and Ontario medical associations called on Canadians yesterday to share their ideas for improving the country's health care system by saying that people should be allowed to discuss possible solutions without fear of being branded as supporters of two-tier health.
Dr. Albert Schumacher, a Windsor physician for more than 20 years, kicked off a cross-country series of town hall forums at a Calgary fundraising dinner. He argued that while hospital wait times in this country are growing, Canadians are spending more than $1-billon a year in U.S. hospitals to circumvent year-long queues and equipment shortages, while leaders are often reluctant to address growing problems for fear of being accused of trying to demolish universal health care.
"One of the difficulties until now is that politicians will immediately cast any spokesperson for debate and discussion as pro-American, pro-private, two-tier health care. And that's a little far from the truth." |

I'm sure he will be quickly attacked as a Bushie Poodle by the medical unions and unreconstructed academics. But reform is needed, and there are more than two models in the world. |
