Hi
This post is for those who have taken ESL a step further and are thinking of launching, or have launched, more specialized careers in ESL.
Laying aside all arguments about the efficacy of ESL teaching in Korea for just a moment, I'd like to hear from people who've gone back and upgraded (or upgraded their credentials online) if it made a difference, if it didn't, if they could do it again what would they change as their discipline?
A little background - came to Korea with very arts rich background, and some English-teaching-useful job experience and after enjoying my year here, went back and got TESL Canada and now I'm enjoying public school but thinking about doing a one-year teacher's degree tack-on to my existing degree with an optional course to teach elsewhere. I'm not sure if it's better to go with more lateral-level training (B.Ed.)(I know some teachers here have B.Eds and are unhappy with their experience in Korea) or bypass it altogether and do more specialized (M. TESOL) In the B.Ed route, I'd do one of the following optional courses:
- international school teaching
- kindergarten specialization
There are other courses more relevant to Canadian issues such as Education of Children of 1st Nations, but I think I'll probably do one of the two above, if I don't go for a Master's in TESOL.
I guess I'm trying to gauge which has the most currency (and I'm thinkin g of international school teaching optional course for places like Dubai) but I'd prefer to learn about the currency value of such an upgrade through the experiences of people who are doing it here.
Constructive replies only, please, and have a good Chuseok everyone.
