heading there in spring for a week, and i'm really just looking for a place to relax and chill. my sole intent is to find a cheap hotel/bungalow next to a beautiful beach i can lounge on. nightlife and shopping is not a necessity at all in this case. so, where should i go? |

Boracay. Alona Beach (Panglao), Camiguin, Bohol, Siargao (General Luna) - Cloud 9.
7000+ islands and they all have beaches and cheap accomodation.
Just do a search here for any of the above listed destinations and there is lots of info.
google is also your friend.

Pandan island resort - www.pandan.com. We've just come back from 2 weeks there (after spending 2 and a half months touring the Philippines) and we found it to be the best place if you just want to RELAX! It's a bit of a pain to get there (3 hr bus from Manila to Batangas, then a 2 hour ferry to Abra de Ilog, then a 4 hour bus ride followed by a 10 minute banca ride i.e. it'll take u a day in total to get there- or you can charter a $500 seaplane that'll get you there in an hour or so!!) but it is REALLY worth it!
There is only one resort on the island, but it's really reasonable at $12 a night for a private room with a shared bathroom, or about $25 for an entire cabin on the beach all to yourself! It is SO quiet though (there is no nightlife or shopping at all on the island)-at times, we were the only tourists on the entire island! They serve buffet meals at about $7 a meal (Great!) and the drinks are SO cheap too, like the rest of the Philippines! But what we liked the most was the snorkelling (with turtles too) - it was really out of this world - some of the best we've seen in the Philippines and Malaysia. You can also go sea Kayaking and they run a dive shop - you can go diving on Apo reef easily from there. There's internet on the island too.
If you want a bit more nightlife, but still a beautiful beach - go to Malapascua island - said to be the next Boracay, but it hasn't developed much yet. It really is BEAUTIFUL, although it lacks the snorkelling. To get there its a flight to Cebu and then a 4 hour bus ride, followed by a 30 min ferry ride. We went there with the intention of only diving to see the thresher sharks, but we stayed an extra night when we saw how beautiful it was!
Panglao would be your next bet, but we found it to be a bit crowded.
Hope this info helps. |

If you had checked the link on Boracay you would have found that prices run from about $15-$150 per night.
Perhaps you should just book a package tour and not worry about it. |

True - people go there.
It's also a gorgeous island that is well worth it. |

Screw packages tours, the guides will bug the hell outta ya to pay for some overpriced island hopping, massage or scuba diving program. The packages are cheap for a reason: they'll try to get more money out of you later on. Some packages now have a straight penalty for separating from the group of between $50 to $100 per day.
Just get airfare and stay away from the Koreans. There are many Koreans there on Boracay, but not as bad as I feared. |
