On Saturday, I impulsively rescued a mistreated kitty from a pet store in my small town of Janghowon, outside Icheon. For a growing list of reasons, I cannot keep the kitty, so I am attempting to find it a good home.
I have not gotten to the vet yet and she's at an ambiguous age so I am not sure of the gender. She is white with orange spots and tail and green eyes.
She seems to be in good health, considering I found her in a bird cage being fed pieces of samgyepsal. She is very playful and considering how much nibbling of my fingers she does, I believe she at the teething stage.
This is my first post, and I am not sure how to attach pictures (its doesn't help that the faq page won't load), so anyone who is interested in her, can message me and I will send a couple pictures I took. |

You mean you bought a cat from a shop??
You have more chance on passing it on if you have the kitten medically checked first. People will be more inclined to adopt it if they know its sex and that it is medically sound. |

I will be taking the kitty to the vet next week. Unfortunately, I have to go out of town for that, there are only agricultural veterinarians in Janghowon. |

If you can get into Icheon somewhat easily then I can give you directions to a decent vet near the bus terminal. Pm if you need to know where it is.

You went into a shop an bought a damn kitten. Dress it up as you want you were not being responsible. |

I fail to see a lack of responsibility in my actions. I did not go to E-mart and on a whim spend 500,000won to purchase a cute whittle pet-mill kitty at the peak of my hormonal cycle. I live in the country, I am well aware of the abundance of strays in Korea (of which I don't feel sorry for, if you were to choose between castration and living on the street, you would probably take the latter). An ajoshi, who owns a little fish shop put a stray kitten he found in a bird cage and fed her pork (a meat which can be toxic to a cat). I passed by and spent 10,000won to liberate her, determined to find her a good home. I have had her checked by a very reputable vet with the help of my employer. She is in good health and is happy. Irresponsibility remains to be seen, if my actions reek of any unfortunate defect on my part it is the naive idealism that there isn't another stray in that bird cage right now.
Thank you for your input, I always enjoy the sting of self-righteous indignation. |

but the 10,000 won you put in the ajumma's pocket convinces her to stuff two more into the cage
buying from pet stores contributes to the problem not the solution
there are plenty of strays and animal shelter kitties to be adopted: to help reduce the problem |

Don't laugh have you seen some of the pet shops here? I saw what I assume to be pure breed Russian Blue kittens that appeared to be starving in a pet shop here in Seoul. I can only guess they haven't been whined and couldn't eat the solid food or had some other health issue.
I couldn't believe the vendor would let his product get into that condition let alone try and sell it. It was all I could do to turn around and walk out of that shop.
You might try this group and see if someone is willing to foster or adopt the cat. And yes you were impulsive but it is now your responsibility to see the at is well taken care of.

Thanks but I posted an ad for the kitty on Lonely Life Time when I started this thread. A couple teaching here snatched her up in 40 minutes and they plan to take her home with them after they finish. I don't believe that there is a solution to the problem such as the deplorable treatment of animals in Korea. Culturally ingrained problems are intractable. All one can do is help the individual cases as they come. And yes I did make it more tempting for that shop owner, but to what extent do we censor our actions in order to save the world from itself? I mean we all came to Korea on planes fueled by kerosene and the majority of us enjoy a little kalbi or samgyepsal now and again. I am not excusing myself, I do see your point, just pointing out a fact of life.
And removing a animal from captivity is the correct use of the work 'liberating'. (A word that has taken on an ironic usage since the Iraq War, don't you think?) |
