I noticed on www.stuff.co.nz an online survey about global warming and New Zealanders' efforts to save energy and be more environmentally-friendly. Interestingly, in response to the question "Are you doing anything to help limit global warming?" a disturbingly high 67% clicked "No, I'm not convinced". Sad

This suggests perhaps a) The survery was rigged, b) the limited audience of the survey caused a skewed result or c) New Zealand is not the "100% Pure" eco-paradise seen on the TV adverts but is in fact home to a huge number of ill-informed rednecks.

To the kiwis out there, are we really as bad as this?

Yep, environmentally we're not the greatest.

Auckland and Christchurch have high levels of air pollution.

We constantly pump raw sewage and farm effluent into the sea, untreated.

Our major waterways are stuffed from nitrogenous farm run off, noxious introduced species of fish, plants and algae and silt from erosion.

It's a nice country, but we're doing a good job of ruining it for future generations, and don't even get me started on the South Island hydro scheme.

I think the media and policy makers aren't doing anyone any favours by telling people to help the global warming situation. The term itself is contentious and misunderstood. Words like pollution, recycling, and conservation are NOT misunderstood and should be the catch phrases used to convince people that there is an environment catastrophe looming if we don't clean up our acts.
