Yesterday was a day for the record books. I witnessed two bike accidents in one day.
The first one was the most dramatic and involved a motorcycle police officer and one of the korean teachers from my high school. A co-teacher and I were walking down the school driveway on our way to lunch when a fellow teacher passed us in his car. When he came to the t-junction ahead of us he had to nudge his car a little into the traffic to see past parked cars. He sped up to cross the road and turn left. This cop on his Harley came whizzing by and somehow connected the rear bumper of the teacher's car. The teacher obviously did not see the oncoming officer.
I was a hard crunching impact. The cop and his bike went flying and landed about 2 meters beyond the car skidding down the road. This all happened with me and the co-teacher standing right next to the road. Luckily the cop got his legs away from the skidding bike and ended up sprawled over the road next to his bike. I ran over to the cop who was struggling to get up. I gave him a hand and asked him if he was ok. Well he seemed to be fine and in his right mind becasue he did answer me in good English.
I guided him towards the sidewalk and he painfully started to check himself out. His pants were all torn up and his riding boots had a nasty gash down the side. He seemd to have hurt his elbow pretty badly becasue he kept holding on to it and complaining about the pain.
His fellow officer pulled up on his bike and started spray painting around the bike and scrape marks on the road. I walked over to the bike and picked up the officers watch. It was a nice gold watch but after the smash it was all sctrached up. Handed his watch to him and again he thanked me for my help in English.
Well my job was done for now so I walked of to have a nice lunch. I spoke to the teacher this morning and he said everything was ok. He had to go to the cop station for a statement and it seems his insurance will cover all of the damage.
The second crash was later at night and less dramatic. A guy on a scooter came speeding down the narrow street I was walking in. As he approached an intersection a car slowly turned into the narrow street. I saw the smash coming form a mile away. This dude on the scooter had no protection on and was blasting down the road. He slammed on the brakes and went flying as the bike gave way under him. He hit the road with his left leg first and somehow avoided hitting his head and the oncoming car. He was carrying a shopping bag that was obviously full of milk because there was a big pool of milk around the bike. The guy slowly got up picked up his bike and hobbled of to the side of the road.
I am planning on buying a new bike soon and I am thinking that this might be a sign not to buy a new bike |

It sounds like both of those accidents could have been avoided by the motorbike riders. Too bad for them, but damn.. don't go flying down an alley or speeding through an intersection without paying attention and you should be pretty much fine. |
