that a story about a woman killing her husband because he had emotionally abused her for 20 years would have been written in 1917? Not only written, but published in a magazine (Every Week) and chosen to be reprinted in that year's Best American Short Stories, then finally chosen to be re-re-printed in Best American Short Stories of the Century?
I mean, humans are humans, so the same situations are repeated generation after generation, but I was surprised to run across this story (by Susan Glaspell). |

It's not surprising, except for the publication of it, perhaps. But then again, we've always been fascinated by tales of the dark side of human behaviour. |
