that a story about a woman killing her husband because he had emotionally abused her for 20 years would have been written in 1917? Not only written, but published in a magazine (Every Week) and chosen to be reprinted in that year's Best American Short Stories, then finally chosen to be re-re-printed in Best American Short Stories of the Century?

I mean, humans are humans, so the same situations are repeated generation after generation, but I was surprised to run across this story (by Susan Glaspell).

It's not surprising, except for the publication of it, perhaps. But then again, we've always been fascinated by tales of the dark side of human behaviour.
