Germany, India face tough Olympic qualifiers

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - World champions Germany and India were set to contest tricky men's qualification matches for next year's Beijing Olympics after the draws were released.

The Germans must win a qualifying tournament in Kakamigahara, Japan from April 5-13 against Japan, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland to make the trip to Beijing.

India, the eight-time Olympic champions, face Britain, Austria, Bangladesh, Chile, and Egypt in Santiago, Chile from March 1-9 with the winner qualifying for the Summer Games.

The third qualifying tournament in Auckland, New Zealand from February 2-10 features Argentina, Cuba, France, Ireland, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago.

The winners of the three qualifying events will join the nine nations that have already assured their place in the 12-nation Olympic competition, according to an International Hockey Federation release.

The nine Australia (Oceania champions), Belgium (European bronze medallists), Canada (Pan American champions), China (hosts), South Korea (Asian Games winners), the Netherlands (European champions), Pakistan (Asian Games bronze medallists), South Africa (African champions) and Spain (European silver-medallists).


And on top of that..it's field hockey. I only know this because ice hockey isn't a summer Olympic sport
