Coffee Cup wants to come to Korea armed to the teeth, everyone's in an uproar about Helios, and we've got a poll on whether you've had your teeth kicked-in in Korea.

I lived in Korea for 5 and a half years and never had any serious problems, and I'm not the friendliest, most-easy going person to deal with. In fact I've done stuff in Korea that I KNOW would've earned me a royal ass-kicking back home.

Sure I've had stuff stolen in Korea, I've had stares and insults and even got into a couple of very minor scuffles (pushing matches and fist shaking really), but on the whole I felt perfectly safe in Korea- safer than a lot of other countries I've been to.

Am I alone in this? I find it hard to believe. I mean **** can happen to anyone anywhere, but is everyone really walking around in fear these days? Enquiring minds want to know...

Am I going to get beat up or mugged or pick-pocketed? No
Am I going to get mowed down by traffic or ripped off by my employer? Somewhere between perhaps and probably
I did have my brand new locked-up bicycle stolen from outside my apartment. (As did another good friend of mine in another city.)

I would say much safer than at home.

The passive-agressive behavior displayed by many (particularly Korean males who smell of soju) tends to make me think otherwise at times, but in general, I feel safe.

Maybe CC doesn't want to come "armed to the teeth", but has arrived at this board, smelled the air, taken a measure of the views of those who post here, and tailored his posts to push as many of our buttons as he can.

That certainly is plausible. I was thinking of this thread when I wrote that-

Yes, it is definetely one of the safest countries in the world.. right up there with Japan. That is a fact!!

I've been to around 30 countries, 48 American States.. and South Korea is probably the only place I've ever been where I can walk around at night and completely drop my guard down without any fear about anything whatsoever.. (well, here and Japan).

Good post!! and a needed one!!

I'd say it depends alot on where you are, who you are, and when you are where you are. Overall, I feel very safe.

I don't worry so much about material possessions here but I've had a lot of incidents of scary behaviour. I've been narrowly missed being assaulted here several times, and am repeatedly groped etc.

I feel less safe in korea than I do back home, but like I've said before I am a freak magnet.

I feel safer in Korea than I do back "home" but whether I actually am, is another thing altogether.

Haha mr bulsajo, can see you made your poll with the outcome already planned. Terribly portrayed in a certain lighting said that I want to "come to Korea armed to the teeth (wtf??)" with the emphasis on "big bad weapons." Oh boy weapons?! Better vote Korea safest in the world.
Another mistake you make is your "feeling" in Korea, you are a single human being with a very biased view of Korea not to mention "feelings" being your main thermometer, at least in your post. As long as I feel safe then I won't be attacked (??).

Hey Lemon I'd really like to know what is your obsession with me or what I've said? You seem to ride just about everyone of my posts and now you are accusing me of "pushing people's buttons??"

I would like to say if a person doesn't like what I think then they can skip past it. Perhaps this website has an "ignore" feature as well? But you are right I've made this perfectly clear before I arrived at this board and I've seen perhaps as many as a dozen users talk explicitly about being attacked or witnessing one, let's not forget nuclear tensions and increased political hatred of the west (not just cultural or jealousy over their women) and putting all these things together plus having read some articles on Americans being slashed at random with a knife I can say that you are right, I've read all this stuff and I am saying that I want to be prepared.

Here is a somewhat more balanced poll -- Ever had your teeth kicked in? At least this user Helly provided a great array of answers covering all replies.

That must be the poll where over 80 percent of respondents gave some version of "no".

Why can't we respond? Only those who agree with you may reply?

No according to the math on that one it said 52% said no, and by count the remaining 48% said they had or a friend had or they believe it will happen before they leave Korea. (officially 9 to 8 ).

On a side note though I just think it's sure to say that you and I really don't agree on anything at all so let's just leave it at that, after all this message board is a democracy and a freedom forum is it not? Are users supposed to allowed to pester other users without ramifications? Another thing you are a webmaster are you not? I have to say no one is interested debating with you then you might wanna switch over to another user name for debates. I personally have to interest.

Smart man.

Your safety here depends entirely on you. I can hang in a "Mogrel Mob" bar back home ( If I'm taken in by a member ) because I know how to be mellow. Most bar violence is preceeded by pride. Very rarely will a person putting up no macho resistance be beaten to a pulp for no reason. And if that happens you have to ask yourself where are you and why are you there?

CC, you mentioned that you doubted your own ability not to "snap" at some point if you face verbal harrasment, THAT is what is going to make Korea a dangerous place for you.

Oh "snap," oh wow snap is a psycho word. Anyone who would speak in that manner must be psychotic. Not. Nice mistranslation though, don't know if it was intentional or not though.
