Which place is better to teach at? I want to save up money. Can you save decent money in Thailand?
Where would you teach at given another oppurtunity to decide? |

depends on your qualifications and experience, but there is a 90% chance you wont save nearly as much in Thailand.
currency relative world value of baht is much lower than won... your earning/expenses ratio might be the same or better in Thailand, but the money you save wont be as valuable anywhere else. |

Short answer: No. Your salary will probably be RELATIVELY good -- that is, good in relation to the area -- but be low when you convert it into the currency of your home country. |

Depends on whether you want to date an 18 yo bar girl or a 50 yo ladyboy. The latter is decidedly more low-maintenance. |

Just pull a John Mark Karr: Teach at a well-paying international school in Thailand and live in a hovel. Seduce your young students and then you won't be wasting cash in the bars. Do wacky stuff and get paid bank for big tabloid interviews. You're cruisy, mate! |

So does mean that I can take my earnings from teaching in S Korea and live like a king in Thailand???
Also, how far would a thousand US dollars go in Thailand since the US dollar is worth more than the Thai currency??? |

Correct. A long way depending on how cheap you want to live. Best bet is to graft here in Korea, maybe get an online MA and land a university gig. That way you can spend 5 months of the year down in the LOS. |

How much does a Univ gig cost and how would that give me five moths in LOS? |

By uni gig I meant a job at a uni. The better ones give you up to 5 months vacation a year, but for most of them you need an MA. |

The top international programs in universities pay anywhere from 1,000 baht to as high as 2,000 baht per hour (about 30 US to 60 US per hour), but those gigs are so darn tough to find, since the foreign teachers in Thailand are all lining up for them.
Jobs in international high schools can pay as much as 2,000 US per month, with housing thrown in, but again, these are few and far between. There are thousands of foreign teachers in Thailand all waiting for these jobs to open up, and they often have friends on the inside who give them a heads up and/or recommend them to the schools involved.
Just showing up and expecting to find these kinds of jobs might be unrealistic.
What is more realistic is you get a job with a language academy. Those can pay as much as 1,500 US per month, plus basic housing, depending on your qualifications. The minimum you should probably be able to get will be a 1,000 US/month job, which will mean you can have a fairly ok life in Thailand, but won't help you pay for your bills back home.
Over-all, it's better to work in Korea, save up, then retire in Thailand. Trying to save enough while working in Thailand might be a bit of a struggle. |

When I flirted with the idea of working in Thailand about two years ago, outside of international schools there were no jobs in Thailand advertised that paid over 50,000baht a month, and that was much higher than the average. I saw advertisements for government schools that paid as little as half that.
Thailand would probably be a wonderful place to live and work if you could afford it (in other words, saving money was not a priority).
That's the bad news. The good news is you can make a living working at a proper international school if you have the right qualifications, and many of those schools only hire people OUTSIDE of Thailand. |

| Is anyone realistically staying in Korea long enough to save up to go Thailand? Nice thought, but I bet that happening is pretty rare. |

Saving enough to set up shop in Thailand is quite realistic. The Won goes a long, long way in Thailand, as well as the rest of southeast asia. |

One could do six month contracts in the summer here and spend the winters there.
But summers are hot and humid enough here. The thought of LIVING in Thailand just fills me with dread and visions of sweatfests. |
