Thousands of hyphens perish as English marches on
Quote: |
The hyphen has been squeezed as informal ways of communicating, honed in text messages and emails, spread on Web sites and seep into newspapers and books.
"People are not confident about using hyphens anymore, they're not really sure what they are for," said Angus Stevenson, editor of the Shorter OED, the sixth edition of which was published this week.
Another factor in the hyphen's demise is designers' distaste for its ungainly horizontal bulk between words. |

Hyphens are old-fashioned? Pshaw, I say. Pshaw!
It's long been a hobby-horse of mine that the low-lifes on this board don't use hyphens. I've long wondered why the noble hyphen wasn't more in evidence--this article explains why: A semi-literate third-grader writes something on his home computer and everyone follows, lemming-like, right off the cliff-edge. |

I, too, have been frustrated by this shift. And, inexplicably, I have lost many hyphens to professional editors who seem to know no better. |

And the correct use of apostrophes is so, what, 80's? |

Dude on 'ludes should not drive; and EFL instructors should never apply for professional editing jobs, either. |
