just travelled to hong kong and was able to withdraw money with my check card from nonghyup with no problems in Macau, Hong Kong, or China. It is the standard bc check card that they issue, with a maestro logo, does not say international or anything on it but it works. Just letting everyone know that it exists and was really easy to get.

I was surprised mine worked in Japan, but I wouldn't trust it enough
to not take cash.

Hmmm... this is interesting. I should ask them to change my card. Can you scan your card to let me know what it looks like, please?

Thanks.

Mine worked last month in the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Same thing -- BC Check Card, and I had to use Maestro machines.

Mine was rather difficult to acquire, though.

Mine just has "IC CARD" printed on it. No Maestro logo. I wonder if I could change it. I'm pretty close with the bank manager.

Can you tell us what you had to do to get the card? That would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Look at the other thread --- this has been talked about before. Mine worked in Thailand last month. I just walked in and asked the bank for an international card. No problems. It has the Maestro logo on the front and The Cirrus logo on the back.

I got an "international" ATM card from Nonghyup before travelling to the US this past summer. It was quite easy to get... took about 20 minutes. However, I was told to use a 6 digit PIN with this card when accessing money outside of Korea, so I added 2 numbers to my domestic (Korean) PIN that I use with that card. BUT, when I tried using the 6 digit PIN, it didn't work... Used the 4 digit PIN and it worked fine... So, heads up on that if you're told to use a 6 digit PIN...

I had the same card and just changed over to the maestro check card a few months ago. No problem. Just tell them you want to do internet shopping.

Mine also worked in Thailand and the Philippines in the last 2 months.

I had to flirt with the banker. She finally issued me a check card and an overseas card, but she also told me that she was breaking rules by doing so.

I tried to get an international card at Nongyhup, but they stonewalled me with the word "foreigner" when I asked. KB did the same as well.

That's SO MUCH BULLCRAP. Being a foreigner is no excuse to not issue one nor are they breaking any rules when doing so. I worked at Paju English Village (yes, yes I know blahdiblah blah) and the bank lady there (Nonghyup) was very nice and got me an international card AND a check card. #$(*&#(*$& I HATE when banks just use "foreigner" as an excuse instead of being aware of their banks procedures, etc.
