I worked for Nova for 3 years and all I can say is that they brought it on themselves. They are by far the worst company I have ever had the displeasure to work for. What company, while their stocks and dropping faster than Quagmire's pants, decides to open hundreds of new branches in a couple of short years... Japanese staff have been abandoning ship like rats for the year and a half, and now hard working teachers are left holding the bag, and an empty bag at that. Branches are given just $20 a month for supplies but over a year ago, they did away with that. Basically running a branch on zero funds... No Japanese holidays off, no free housing, no pension, no government health care, no bonus, no airfare and the list goes on and on and on. Glad I got out back in February! I feel sorry for many of the teachers who are left questioning themselves and their employer. To the senior kiss @sses who turned a blind eye, I'm glad your world is crashing down. Good luck! |

So are any of these Nova teachers doing the equivalent of a "midnight run?" I didn't see any mention of that. |

No need. Japan has a good visa system, where teachers own their own visa.

I'm in Fukuoka right now visiting friends. I spoke with 2 friends who are current Nova employees and they said that the regular teachers have been paid for this month although it was a few days late. The Japanese staff have not yet been paid nor have the ATs. The AT is the branch kiss @ss who has been promoted to Assistant Trainer. Oh, payday is on the 15th, so almost 2 weeks late. |

There are going to be a lot of happy other institutes who are going to get a lot of experienced teachers soon.
They have a great visa system for teachers to change jobs - I think it's after six months, they can move on to any other job, and their visa is good for something like 3 or 4 years?
Anyone confirm on those numbers or know the correct ones? |

Your initial visa is good for a year (usually). When I came to Japan as a JET back in 2000, we were the first bunch to get 3 year initial visas. The private language schools don't want to spring for them so the 1 years are the norm. However, you can renew your visa for 3 years which is quite nice. There are no restrictions that I'm aware of that states you must be in country 6 months before skipping out of your job to keep the visa valid. Many people sign on with Nova just to get the visa then almost immediately give their 30 day notice. |
