Are the examples correct?
I think that 'I hope I passed that course.' and 'I hope you found your keys.' are very akward to me. I think that 'I hoped I passed that course.' and 'I hoped you found your keys.' is natural.
Can you tell me if I'm wrong and why?

No, the present tense for "hope" is correct. Right now, I hope that I passed that course. Right now, I hope that you have already found your keys.

You could say "hoped" if you are speaking about the past, when you did hope something that you no longer hope. When I was a boy, I hoped for an invitation to Sally's party, but I never got it. I hope everyone else had a good time anyway.
