I go and see my family "every so often".

-Is this commonly used?
Why using "every" together with "so often"?

frustrated,

thanks

Yes, it is common usage.

It comes from the grammar form: every time period (e.g. every day, every week, every month, etc.). So often implies a not frequent time period. So, every so often means you go visit, but not frequently, and not exactly the same time span between visits.

So it's frequently but not regulary??
Thanks

I think Bob said "not frequently". "Every so often" is like "once in a while."
