Hi everyone
Here're some briefings I got from TAIPEI TIMES(Taiwan).
1.President Chen Shui-bian and Democratic Progressive Party(DPP) presidential candidate Frank Hsieh yesterday dismissed allegations that they were at odds over cross-strait economic policy.
Asking the public to refrain from taking"election talk" too seriously. Chen said that Hsieh would not have made remarks had Hsieh still been the premier or competing in the party's presidential primary.
My question is whether "had Hsieh still been....presidential primary" is a formal invertion leaving out "if"?
2.Chen made the remarks in response to media inquiries about Hsieh's comments on cross-strait economic policy on Monday.Hsieh criticized the administration for "valuing its own old broomstick" and said that .....
I'm not sure if "valuing its own old broomstick" means"one's treasure might not be the same to others".(=Chinese idiom 敝帚自珍? Is there anyone good at both English and Chinese? Please help me.)[/quote]
