Hi, everyone!

Have you ever heard of an idiom "keep early hours"? In my country, Japan, almost all the high school students learn it, but a couplr of years ago, I happend to know that many English speakers don't seem to konw this expresion. In fact, I've never seen anyone from North America who say they use this. Do you think ESL learners don't have to learn "keep early hours"?

Thank you!

Yes, it does sound a bit peculiar, or at least old-fashioned and not very much in line with modern usage.

I do hear, however, the expression "keeping late hours" to refer to someone working until very late at night.

If the term "keep early hours" is used to talk about someone who gets up early or works from early in the morning, I think it is a bit unclear what is meant for a native speaker ear. I think a better term might be "rises early".

Best,

Jason
