Hello, teachers!!

Because of man's great capacity for adaptability and his remarkable ingenuity, he can improve in a great variety of ways upon the manner in which other animals meet their needs. Man has the ability to create his own environment, instead of, as in the case of other animals, being forced to submit to the environments in which he finds himself.

I looked the word "manner" in the dictionary, and found that the meanings are as follows.

manner---
(1) A way of doing something or the way in which a thing is done or happens
(2) A way of acting; bearing or behavior

(*)
I think that the word "manner" is "labor." However, I am not confident.

Thank you in advance.

Of the two (quite correct) definitions for 'manner' you present here, the first one fits the sentence most accurately.

I'm not quite sure how you conclude manner can mean "work". Could you explain and/or provide an example?

Cheers,

- Jason

Dear EnglishRaven:

Thank you for your quick replies.

I thought that what man do is "work," or "labor," so I paraphrased "manner" into "work," or "labor." However, this assumption seems not to be right. This is because the author wrote "the manner in which other animals meet their needs." Animals don't work.

Take care and have a nice day!!
