Hello, teachers!!

The soccer game was shown on a big screen in front of [ ] audience.
(1) a large (2) a lot of (3) many (4) much
--->
The answer is (1)=a large. Why is (2) wrong? Would you tell me?

I googled and found the following webpage.

The first sentence is:
The North American IPv6 Summit, held on June 14 to 17 in Santa Monica, California, U.S., gathered a lot of audience in DoD-related business, and ...

In the sentence above, you can see "a lot of audience," but is it wrong?

"Audience" is singular. An audience, a large audience, a small audience, etc.
"A lot of" is used with plurals. A lot of people, a lot of apples, a lot of kitties, etc.

Yes, the grammar looks incorrect. Reading through the link, I find a few minor errors like that. It appears to be written by someone who has a high English skill but not fluent enough to be an editor.
