I know people say "cheers" before they drink alcohol.

But what does it mean when someone writes "cheers", at the end of every comment he/she posts.

Does it mean "cheer up, everyone"?

Can you say "cheers" in real life as a way of comforting someone?

I think in UK now it means "thanks".
