Hi, everyone!

This is a part of the lyrics to "My Life" by Billy Joel

Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.

Could anyone tell me what "stand-up routine" means?

One style of comedy is to stand on a stage and tell humorous jokes or stories to the audience. It is called "stand-up comedy". The person who does it can be called a "stand-up comic", and his performance is his routine or "stand-up routine". There are many places where a person can go to see a stand-up comedy routine such as The Improv Comedy Club and The Comedy and Magic Club near where I live.

Hi, Bob S

Thank you for your reply.

So, "he gives them a stand-up routine in LA" means "giving comedians a chance to perform before the audience"? If so, is "he" a manager or owner of a "comedian club" or something??

No. It means, "Now he is doing stand-up comedy / is performng stand-up routines in L.A."
