Dear teachers:

I have a question about a gesture "YA", and it looks like the alpha "V" made by a first finger and a middle finger. The gestures are usually used in China, Taiwan, or Japan when people are taking pictures. But I have a friend who had lived in America for a few years told me that there weren't "YA" gestures in America. Could teachers tell me that what my friend told me is true or not? Thanks for your help.

Best wishes,
Joe Su

I have seen the gesture you describe made by some Japanese tourists.

In North America, this is commonly referred to as a "peace sign". e.g. no more war.

Originally it was "V" for Victory. But during the 1960's, it was adopted by the counter-culture as a greeting for "peace and love".

What an interesting question! Well, I don't know how is it like in North America, but in Brazil all teenagers usually do this gesture when they're on a photo!
