How is 'he gave her a smile' different from 'he smiled at her'? I understand they are semantically the same but probably different in function, as in 'gave the door a kick' vs. 'kicked the door' and 'gave a look round the room' vs. 'looked around the room'.

He gave her a smile means maybe he was feeling good, maybe he was feeling bad, maybe he was feeling embarrassed, it doesn't matter, he made his face smile anyway.
He smiled at her implies that he was feeling positive emotions that made him smile.
