I learned that it was correct to use a singular verb with words like "None."
Example: None of us is going to the movies. This is because "none" is like saying "no one," or "not one." Now I'm hearing that a plural verb with "none" is acceptable and even preferred, such as, "None of us are going to the movies." Is this correct?

Plural and singular verb conjugation is possible with "None"
I would also agree that plural is preferred. When I say both aloud to myself, I think that the plural form sounds better and more natural.
