A student was telling me that she found it difficult to 'believe' the taxi-drivers in Vietnam, I felt the need to correct and say that "trust" the taxi-drivers sounded better. The student asked me why this was the case and I unfortunately couldn't think of an answer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Well you are right is not the same thing.

Believe in someone means that you think this person is telling the truth even when you don't trust her.
Trust someone means that you are confident and that you think the person is honest.

For instance, taxi-drivers in Vietnam, you can believe them when they talk to you about what place is nice to visit and may not trust them when they tell you that the road they are taking is the better.
