Please help;

If I remember correctly, this incident took place two years before I was admitted to college.

Shouldn't it be "had taken place" instead of took place??

Thanks!

Why do you think it should be "had taken place"?

"I was admitted" is past tense and the incident was even before that as it's said to be two years before.

So I wonder...."had taken place" might be better??

Thanks.

You can use perfect tense but it is not better. I think "took place" is better because it is simpler and also correct. Sometimes perfect tense is the only good way to say something, but often perfect tense is only one way to say it.
If the sentence is correct with simple tense, I use simple tense.
