Quote:
1.Up to that time I had worked without rest.
2.Up to that time I have worked without rest.
3.Up to that time I will have worked without rest.
4.Up to that time I worked without rest.

Which one is correct?

Thanks.

Number 1 is correct. Up to that time [in the past], I had worked [even earlier] without rest.

I agree that number 1 is the most obvious. This example would be if you were telling someone about something that happened in the past. You were explaining, for example, how hard you worked from the beginning of the exam period until your first exam. Up to that time (the time of the first exam) I had worked without rest.

What about number 3 CP? Suppose I am looking into the future. I know my exam schedule begins soon, and I have a lot of work to do. The first exam is the hardest, and it will occur in the future at "that time". Could you accept "Up to that time I will have worked without rest." as a possibility?

In addition, although number 1 would be considered the "best" answer on any kind of test, for spoken American English at least, number 4 is gaining ground.

Number 2, however, doesn't work.

Yes, I agree that if I am talking about the future, predicting that I am going to work nonstop until a point in time, I could correctly phrase it,

"Up to that time I will have worked without rest."
