It was a few weeks before the Chrismas of 1917.The beautiful snowy landscapes of Europe were ______ by the war.
A. blackened B. destroyed
The answer given is A. But why is answer B wrong?
To win, contestants must land their craft on the surface of the moon and let it wander for more than 500 meters, or 1,640 feet. The craft must also send video and Internet clips back to Earth in real time.
What does "in real time" mean here?
Thanks |

"Destroyed" would mean there was nothing left. No matter what had happened to a landscape, there would be something there.
"In real time" means as it was happening, not a recording to be seen later. |

I agree that "blackened" is the correct choice. The clue is in the "snowy landscapes" phrase. By using the word "blackened," the author provides a visual contrast with the white snow. It's a good word choice. |
