The position of children in American family and society is no longer what is used to be. The ordinary family in colonial North America was mainly concerned with survival and beyond that, its own economic prosperity.
What does "beyond" mean in this context?
Thanks

Hi Jason,
I'd say that "beyond" is here used in the sense of "furthermore". So the main issue was survival and besides that there was the - also important - issue of economic prosperity.
Hope that helps. |
