I saw #1 in a book, but I think that #2 is correct. So which one is more natural, #1 or #2?

Things can be adapted to or for film, opera, etc. I wouldn't care to hazard a guess as to which is more common, but I know for a fact that both prepositions are widely used. I'll let others argue about which is more common.

There actually is a real problem in the original sentence, however (assuming you succeeded in copying it correctly). It makes no sense. It only makes sense if it reads plays (plural).
