Which of the follwoing do you think is correct?
(A) There is a number of customers shopping in the market.
(B) There are a number of customers shopping in the market.

There is a number... is the grammatically correct version.
Number is singular
However you will hear, there are a number of customers much more often in everyday use so no doubt the grammar will be amended to accommodate those who find it difficult. |
