Hi,
I just read 2 online articles from Bloomberg.com and BusinessWeek respectively, and I don't know their usages and structures of the blue part quotations.
Quote:
European stocks, U.S. index futures and commodities retreated on speculation that prices have risen too fast as the global recession curbs earnings and Chinese demand for raw materials.
Quote:
Chinas stocks fell to a three-month low today as banks and developers declined on speculation officials will take further steps to rein in credit growth and prevent asset bubbles.
Also, there's a similar pattern as the above:
Quote:
The yen advanced against all of its most-traded counterparts as stocks dropped on concern the global economic recovery will be slow, discouraging demand for higher- yielding assets.
My question is how to break these wordings: V+on concern/speculation?
What does it mean?
Thank you very much for your help!!

In all three sentences, 'on something' is used to show the basis or reason for something and coveys the meaning similar to 'on account of' or 'because of'.

And in all three instances the price went down.
