It was a great idea to leave him unknown. But I think he will find out soon.




This sentence should express: It was a great idea to leave him without telling him first.

Is `unknown�possible in this context? Please comment again.

No unknown is not the word to use here.
You leave him in ignorance, or colloquially, "In the dark."
We kept Bill completely in the dark about the upcoming trip.
