Hello, teachers!!
(1) I may work this summer. On the other hand, I may take a long vacation.
(2) I may work this summer. On the contrary, I may take a long vacation
I guess that (1) is correct, but why is (2) wrong? I think that (2) is acceptable in English because I may work this coming summer but I may take a long vacation this coming summer? Do you have any ideas why (2) is wrong?
Thank you in advance. |

On the other hand is correct. It means "or". e.g. I may work or I may goof off.
On the contrary is used to intensify a denial of what has just been said.
e.g. Father: I suppose you'll be working at MacDonald's again this summer?"
You: "On the contrary: I'm biking around Australia." |
