What is the difference between the use of the words house and home?

A house is a building. In my case, I live in a house and it is my home. Someone else might live in an apartment, but that is their home. If you are out shopping, you might tell someone you are going home. It means you are going to return to whever you are living. If someone is homeless, they have nowhere to live.
