Although there are certainly times when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most cases all that is needed is commitment and communication. When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how painful or how uncomfortable something is ,we will always choose to face

But isn't "space" an uncountable noun as with "room" in this case?

It can be a countable noun too - for example a car park (or parking lot) usually has a number of outlined parking spaces. There are also spaces between the words I'm typing.

Either works fine in your sentence - I'd say that making a space is better though, it implies creating a specific space (like outlining a parking space) which is set aside for a specific purpose. It's like having a messy desk - you can clear some space (generally tidy up so some of the desk is clear) or clear a space (clear an area so you're able to do something in particular).
