Which is appropriate for the blank in the passage below, #1 or #2?
1. was previously
2. has previously been

A discovery differs from an invention. A discovery is something found in nature that ( ) unknown to people. A new chemical substance is an example of a discovery. A new type of engine is an example of an invention.

I think #1 is appropriate, but I am not sure about #2. What do you think?

'had previously been' would be correct.
